Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test

A simple, fast, and useful test for the acute and post-acute care settings.

Overview & Equipment

The **Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test** is a simple, fast, and useful test for the acute and post-acute care settings. It can be used as a data point for progress during admission or change between admissions.

Equipment: A chair with a straight back and a seat of 16″ height are recommended if performance will be scored against age-established norms. Clock or stopwatch are needed.

Performance & Instructions

Performance: 5x sit<>stand should be performed without arm use if the goal is comparison to age-related norms or for charting an objective parameter of fall risk. It can still be useful if the patient is unable to perform without arm use, but this should be noted.

Instruction to the patient: “I want you to stand up and sit down five times in a row, as quickly as you can, when I say ‘Go’. Be sure to stand up fully and try not to let your back touch the chair back between each repetition. Do not use the back of your legs against the chair.”

Parameters and Norms
